Ronny Chieng

and comedian. Chieng is currently the senior correspondent of The Daily Show on
Comedy Central. He also produced and starred in the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student, which debuted on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017.
Chieng was the son of a Malaysian Chinese family. He was born in Johor Bahru.
He was raised in Singapore and in the United States, living in Manchester, New
Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah in 2013 at the
comedy festival in Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was asked to audition for The
Daily Show's correspondent role two years later. Chieng was selected as one of
the 10 most watched comics in Variety's July 2016 issue. In October 2016,
Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss an Jesse Watters Fox News segment many
thought to be racist. Chieng spoke in expletive-laden terms concerning the
segment of the Fox News, a conservative news network. He also visited NewYork
City's Chinatown where Watters had mocked the residents. The viral video
received coverage in Slate as well as the Washington Post. In his young years,
Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Despite living in Australia for the past
decade, Chieng does not hold citizenship or permanent residence status in
Australia. In 2018, Chieng made a joke about being cynophobic on the Daily Show
however, he afterwards, he clarified that Chieng was "100 per cent not
scared of dogs".
